“Does this stuff actually work, or is it just money down the drain?”
It’s the question we get asked more than any other, and it’s a fair one. If you’ve never had a website or paid for any kind of local SEO before, it can feel a bit like buying a lottery ticket. You hand over some money, and you’re just supposed to trust that customers will start finding you.
So let’s skip the sales talk and answer it properly: what does “working” actually look like, what’s realistic to expect, and how do you know if it’s worth doing at all?
1. Your customers are already searching. The question is whether they find you.
Think about the last time you needed a plumber, an electrician, or someone to sort your garden. Chances are you didn’t reach for the Yellow Pages. You searched on your phone, looked at whoever came up first, had a quick glance at their reviews, and either called them or moved straight on to the next name.
That’s not a marketing theory, it’s just how people find local trades now. The businesses that show up cleanly with a proper Google listing, a few good reviews and an easy way to get in touch are the ones getting picked. The ones that don’t show up at all simply aren’t part of the conversation, even if their work is brilliant.
So the real question isn’t “does SEO work?” It’s “are you currently one of the options a searching customer sees, or are you invisible to them?” You can see exactly what we check and fix on our services page.
2. You don’t need a big flashy website for this to work
A lot of people assume that if a website doesn’t work, it must need to be bigger, fancier, or more expensive. In our experience it’s almost always the opposite. A tradesperson doesn’t need ten pages of content. They need one clean page that says what you do, where you work, and how to reach you, sitting behind a Google listing that’s actually filled in properly.
That’s deliberately how we’ve built things. You can see exactly what’s included, and at what price, on our pricing page. No plan involves a 20-page site nobody will read.
3. Be realistic about the timeline
This is the bit most agencies won’t tell you upfront: nobody can promise you exactly when the phone will start ringing, and anyone who does is guessing. Some businesses see enquiries within the first couple of weeks, especially if their listing was in a poor state to begin with. Others take a bit longer to build up momentum, particularly in more competitive trades or areas.
What we can promise is that we make you easier to find, more credible once you’re found, and simpler to contact. Whether that turns into one extra job a month or ten depends on your trade, your area and your reviews, not just the website itself. We’ve written more on this in our FAQs, including honest answers on timing and what’s actually included.
4. Work out what doing nothing is actually costing you
It’s easy to look at a monthly fee and think of it as a cost. But it’s worth flipping that around for a second. If a competitor down the road has a tidy Google profile and a website, and you don’t, every customer who compares the two of you on their phone is quietly picking them by default, whether their work is better than yours or not.
We’ve actually broken down what it typically costs to piece all of this together yourself, freelancer by freelancer, versus having it handled as one service. You can see the full comparison on our cost comparison page.
5. There’s no risk in trying it properly
This is really the heart of it. If you’re still not sure, that’s fine, you shouldn’t have to gamble on a 12-month contract to find out. Every Catchlio plan is a straightforward rolling monthly payment. No long contract, no exit fees, no tie-in.
If it’s genuinely not bringing you value, you can leave with 30 days’ notice. We’d rather earn your business every month than lock you into staying.
The Bottom Line
SEO and a proper website aren’t magic, and anyone promising overnight results is either exaggerating or selling you something you don’t need. What they do is make sure that when someone nearby searches for what you do, you’re actually in the running, instead of invisible next to the competitor who bothered to sort their listing out.
If you’re still on the fence, the easiest next step is just to ask us to take a look at what you’ve currently got (or haven’t got) online, and tell you plainly whether it’s worth fixing. If you’d also like to know why we do things differently from a typical agency in the first place, we’ve written about that too in why local trades are sick of traditional web agencies.
