If you run a local business, you’ve probably had the emails and calls: “We can get you to the top of Google.” Usually from an SEO agency, usually with a monthly fee attached.
So do you actually need one? For some businesses, yes. But for most local trades and small businesses trying to win customers nearby, the things that make the biggest difference are simpler, cheaper and often overlooked. Here’s the difference, in plain English.
What an SEO agency campaign usually involves
SEO stands for search engine optimisation: making your website show up higher in Google. A full SEO campaign from an agency typically includes things like:
- Researching the words people search for
- Writing regular blog posts and new pages
- Building links to your website from other sites
- Technical changes to your website
- Monthly reports on rankings and traffic
Done well, this can work, but it takes time, often many months, and it usually costs several hundred pounds a month or more. It’s designed to help you compete across a wide area or for very competitive searches.
How Google decides who appears locally
When someone searches for “electrician near me” or “plumber in Stoke”, Google usually shows a map with a handful of local businesses before the normal results. Google says three main things decide who appears there:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching, or the area they searched for.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business looks, including your reviews and how established you seem online.
Notice what that list is built around: your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your business details. You don’t need a big campaign to get those right. You need them complete, accurate and kept up to date.
What “local SEO” really means for a small business
“Local SEO” sounds technical, but for most local businesses it comes down to a handful of practical basics:
- A complete Google Business Profile: the right category, your services, the areas you cover, opening hours, photos and regular updates.
- Consistent business details: the same name, phone number and address on Google, Facebook, Yell and other directories. Mismatched details can confuse both Google and customers.
- Genuine reviews: a steady flow of reviews from real customers, and replies from you.
- A clear website: one that says what you do and where, works well on a phone, and makes it easy to call or message you.
None of these are glamorous. But they’re exactly what customers check before they call, and what Google looks at when deciding who to show.
Why the basics often win for local trades
If your customers are mostly within a few miles, the competition you face is the handful of other local businesses on that map, not every company in the country. A tradesperson with a well-kept profile, good photos and a healthy set of reviews will often get the call over a competitor with a bigger website but an empty or out-of-date listing.
There’s also a practical point. Plenty of small businesses pay for an SEO campaign while their Google profile still has the wrong hours, no photos and only a few reviews. Getting the basics right first means any money you spend later works harder.
When an SEO agency genuinely is worth it
To be fair, an SEO agency can be the right choice if:
- You work in a very competitive market, where lots of businesses already have strong profiles and plenty of reviews
- You want to rank across a wide area, a whole region or the country
- You sell online, or rely on people finding detailed information on your website
- You already have the local basics nailed and want to grow further
If that’s you, a good agency can be well worth the investment. Just make sure you know exactly what they’ll do each month, and that your Google profile and listings are in good shape first.
A quick local basics checklist
Before you spend money on any campaign, check you can say yes to these:
- My Google Business Profile is claimed, complete and has the right category
- My opening hours, phone number and service areas are correct
- I have recent photos of real work
- I ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to them
- My business details match everywhere they appear online
- My website says clearly what I do and where, and works on a phone
If you can tick all six, you’re ahead of many local competitors already.
